- I can tell you from long experience that the Gateway Telepath is a real
- piece of garbage. If the machine is recently purchased, send the
- offending part back and get your money back for it. If not, I would tell
- you to go to Gateway's tech support system for help, but I wouldn't be
- ablke to stop laughing long enough to get the words out. Gateway tech
- support is a bad joke, my friend!
-
- This company, while it has made some truly solid computers in the past
- (one of which I am using right now, a beautiful old workhorse that has
- never let me down in three years), is clearly getting these chintzy
- knock-off modems cheap from some company far more interested in making
- $$$ than in supplying quality merchandise. It's a pitful comment on the
- company that after years of consistent complaints about these modems....
-
- .......and by that I mean that nearly every person I know with a Gateway
- and a Telepath (of any speed) tells me the modems suck; they complain of
- various and sundry problems, some quite serious, none of which ever get
- resolved easily; only a few workarounds ever succeed with these units,
- and these can be elaborate affairs involving serious tradeoffs in
- connectivity and ease of use, etc. Gateway has been told over and over
- about these problems: look on any Gateway-related forum on any
- service/newsgroup, such as the one they run on Compuserve or the
- newsgroup alt.sys.pc-clone.gateway2000, for example. There you will see
- that everyday, literally hundreds of user complain of these same kinds
- of problems.....
-
- ....yet in spite of this, the company still continues to sell these
- units with little or no changes in manufacturing techniques and none at
- all in customer satisfaction.
-
- What can I say? You bought a bad modem; no, you bough a *really* bad
- one! Don't throw good money after it! send it back or foist it off on
- some unsuspecting newbie for a song. Better that than lose any more hair
- to worrying about this piece of crap!
-
- .....IMHO, mind you.
